New grant goes to KU for online education research

New grant goes to KU for online education research
News from Kansas City Star:

Researchers at the University of Kansas want to know if the nation’s online schools work for students with disabilities; a $ 7.5 million federal grant will help them find out.

The five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to KU’s Center for Research on Learning also will allow researchers to come up with new ways to use technology to improve learning.

“We want to determine what’s happening in online instruction in K-12 schools and whether students’ needs are being met,” Diana Greer, assistant research professor and co-principal investigator for the project, said.

The research into online education will include a review of virtual schools, which have become a growing alternative — especially in Kansas where charter schools are virtual — for parents whose children struggle to learn in traditional brick-and-mortar schools.

To begin, the project KU will form the Center on Online Learning and Students with Disabilities, with two partner organization…………… continues on Kansas City Star

FORUM: Online education increases opportunity for all

FORUM: Online education increases opportunity for all
News from North County Times:

Sometimes, challenges offer golden opportunities to be innovative. Educating our children during these tough times offers one such opportunity.

I read a recent The Californian article from Jennifer Kabbany (“Online schooling offers new options,” Oct. 9) that discusses the growing field of distance learning, where students take classes on their computers at home. She mentions that “Kids nowadays are raised on computers, electronics and the Internet,” so parents should look into online learning if it helps their children.

I could not agree more. As the father of seven children, I am always looking for ways to provide them with more enriching educational opportunities as they head into the workforce.

As a state Assemblyman, I am working hard to stretch our existing education tax dollars to the fullest while providing a top-notch experience for our st…………… continues on North County Times

Greenway boasts high completion rates among online consortium

Greenway boasts high completion rates among online consortium
News from Herald Review:

With the increasing popularity of online education for high schoolers, the Greenway School board listened to an annual report from Infinity Online Director Jo McClure. Infinity is the online education consortium which Greenway has been a member since 2004. The district was one of the original members of the consortium when it began.

It is estimated that more than 1.5 million students take online classes nationally, and of those, 200,000 are full-time online students. As of 2011, 39 different states have state-run virtual education programs.

“Minnesota is one of those that does not. Interestingly, Minnesota has one of the largest numbers of online students, but they do not have a statewide program,” said McClure.

In place of a state-wide program, there are currently 24 online consortiums and other certified virtual education providers throughout the state. Minnesota does have a number of policies regulating onlin…………… continues on Herald Review

Clemson to create online training

Clemson to create online training
News from Charleston Post Courier:

Clemson University will use a $ 2.3 million federal grant to develop new online training tools for factory-floor workers in two of South Carolina’s most promising industries: aviation and automobile.

The high-tech project will be developed by Clemson engineers and will be used to enhance existing workforce programs already offered by state-run technical colleges in the Lowcountry, the Pee Dee and the Upstate.

The partnerships was announced Wednesday.

The university expects to showcase the first of the three-dimensional modules next summer.

The goal is to help make South Carolina more competitive for future jobs within the automotive and aviation industries — two bright spots for the state’s economy, said Clemson President James Barker.

Time for Virtual Schooling to Grow-Up

Time for Virtual Schooling to Grow-Up
News from Big Think:

Virtual schooling is a good idea. Over the past decade or so, online education has proven itself a valuable component of the learning system, from elementary to post-secondary. I personally use a lot of online learning in my own teaching, so I am a tried and true advocate for online learning.

But, it needs to grow up. And fast. As online learning approaches the knee of the exponential curve, we can’t ignore it as just a small tangential sandbox. With 200,000 full-time virtual students nationwide and growing, it is core to the system now and we need to treat it that way.

E-learning ‘provides the next step for medical education’

E-learning ‘provides the next step for medical education’
News from Virtual College:

E-learning models could be successfully tailored to the medical industry, according to recent reports.

Educators in Britain have stressed the need for improved learning methods in medical education to keep in line with many other learning environments where online learning has become a core part of curriculums.

At a meeting of lecturers and teachers as part of a two-day workshop at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) recently, many expressed the positivity of e-learning and cited that it is a flexible and easy-to-maintain approach to acquiring new skills.

In a debate focused on the nature of virtual learning systems, the academic experts suggested that it was not just about the content and delivery but also about the ability for users to dip in and out of the learning experience.

Professor Paul Duvall from the University of Liverpool said: “The challenge for medical educators is to be aware of the new changes and to consider how the latest te…………… continues on Virtual College
