As Gold Sponsor at the 9th annual eLearning Africa Conference in Kampala, Uganda, this year, Microsoft will focus on the need for a more holistic approach to ICT in education. This includes understanding individual school objectives, preparing teachers for the change, and adding the relevant content and services to create a productive and sustainable learning environment. The theme of this year’s conference, which takes place from the 28th – 30th May, is Opening Frontiers to the Future, focusing on how Africans can equip themselves with the skills necessary to not only succeed in their local market, but also shape and lead the global marketplace.

A great example of a school adopting a thoughtful and inclusive approach to eLearning is the Gayaza High School in Uganda. The teachers here are actively embracing technology and attending further training on ICT in education, with 90% of them using laptops. Homework is also done on a network and all classroom content is uploaded and accessible on a website. At the recent Microsoft in Education Global Forum…………… continues on Biztech Africa

Vubiz is excited to release a new online course to meet today’s workplace issues called “Managing the Performance of Your Unionized Employees”. Vubiz President Jim Rapino says today’s corporate market needs a course to keep the workplace efficient and cohesive. “It is the responsibility of a manager or supervisor in a unionized workplace to manage performance effectively and this course helps to achieve this proactively,” explains Rapino.

The online course helps managers and supervisors: identify and understand management rights; establish workplace rules; discuss the impact and causes of poor performance; create an effective performance management plan; understand the three categories of performance management; define “culpability” and explain how to establish it; and then define and apply “progressive discipline”. This course also gives the manager guidelines for conducting a fair workplace investigation.

Elizabeth Smart visits Brawley Union High School

Elizabeth Smart visits Brawley Union High School
News from Imperial Valley Press:

BRAWLEY — Brawley Union High School students sat in rapt attention as they learned about human trafficking and sexual exploitation during a special assembly Friday featuring activist and kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart.

“Even though slavery has been illegal since 1865 there are still thousands of men, women and children who are forced into some type of slavery across the country and so it happens in the United State and it happens here,” Imperial County Assistant District Attorney Deborah Owen told the students. “It happens in the form of human trafficking where people, through power and control, force people into doing things that they don’t want to do and this also many times involves sexual exploitation.”

Fighting to fix online education’s engagement problem, NovoEd books $ 2M
News from VentureBeat:

What’s the greatest shortcoming of online education today? It’s boring. Really boring.

That’s the problem NovoEd raised $ 2 million to solve.

NovoEd, the fourth massive open online course (MOOC) platform to launch out of Stanford – following edX, Udacity, and Coursera – aims to make online education stickier. While most MOOC platforms attempt to recreate the lecture hall, NovoEd wants to facilitate collaborative, group-driven education for universities.

NovoEd’s goal, of course, is to

E-learning speeds up progress in Africa

E-learning speeds up progress in Africa
News from Deutsche Welle:

Under the title “Opening frontiers to the future,” an international E-learning conference has been held in the Ugandan capital, Kampala. This technology is already bringing noticeable benefits to Africa.

More than 1,000 participants from 68 countries met in Uganda’s capital Kampala to discuss the opportunities and challenges of using electronic media together with information and communication technologies (ICT) – known for short as E-learning.

Africa profits immensely from E-learning. That, in a nutshell, was the message from Harold Elletson, a British expert who presented the latest E-learning report at the Kampala conference, for which more than 1,400 specialists in Africa were consulted.

Harold Elletson presented the latest facts and figures at the conference

“E-learning is making a huge difference in all sorts of ways, not only in education but also in other sectors of industry. It is a key factor in African economic growth and the potential for that growth as well,” Elletson told the conference participants.

E-learning accessible in remote Zambia
News from Zambia Daily Mail:

REA COLUMN By CHOOLWE KASAMU
IN LAST month’s column, we shared with you a story from Mulilansolo Mission in Chinsali district. In today’s edition, we share with you a story from a primary school in a remote area which has seen a great transformation after it was connected to electricity.
In the era of new age technology, most villages or rural areas have lagged behind while their colleagues in urban areas quickly catch up with the technology advancements.

There are a number of factors that inhibit rural population from accessing latest technologies. In the Zambian scenario, lack of supporting infrastructure to drive the new technology like electricity is by and large the main cause.
However, through the development of electricity infrastructure under the rural electrification programme, some villages now have access to electricity. This development has changed many lives of the school-going children in rural Zambia.
At Sina Malima Primary School in Southern Province, lives of the leaners in all grades have greatly improved with the aid of e-leaning.
Located over 170km from the provincial capital Choma in the heart of the Zambezi Valley in Sinazongwe district, Sina Malima Primary School is now able to offer e-learning to its leaners, a fact which was never thought of 10 years ago despite its remote location.
In 2010, the Rural…………… continues on Zambia Daily Mail

“Change Your Mind”

I’ve just given up a long-held prejudice.

For years, when anyone mentioned online degrees, I rolled my eyes. Real degrees, I thought, came from real schools. The kinds with blackboards, stuffy brick buildings, and ivy-covered professors.

Like the place I work.

DE—distance ed—is not new. But starry-eyed advocates of of the virtual classroom saw it as a game-changer, allowing isolated, house-bond individuals to take classes and earn degrees. Supporters had a laundry list of benefits: It would reduce pollution, since students didn’t have to drive to school; cut down on heating an air conditioning costs; and save millions of dollars by eliminating the need for more classrooms.

“It’s a God-send,” the breathless enthusiasts proclaimed.

“And it allows quiet students to speak up,” others chimed in.

Ease of online education allows many to get degrees

Ease of online education allows many to get degrees
News from Citizens Voice:

When Maj. Chris Costello of the Pennsylvania National Guard received his fourth overseas deployment in a decade, this time to Kuwait in 2012, he decided to go back to school — in the Arabian Desert.

Along with 20 other soldiers at Camp Buehring, about 10 miles south of the Iraqi border, Costello enrolled in an online MBA course through Marywood University, more than 6,000 miles away.

Camels would roam the outskirts of the base. Most of the servicemen and -women lived in tents. And sandstorms sometimes knocked out the basewide Wi-Fi and sent some of the soldier-students scrambling through the stinging wind for a better connection in the recreation hall. As an officer, Costello had the benefit of living in an air-conditioned apartment on the base with his own Internet connection.

“The biggest challenge I had was dusting the place,” chuckled Costello, now 48 and living in Telford with his family.

The modern comforts and technological advances of online education are allowing more people to get degrees when life prevents or discourages a trip back to a brick-and-mortar school.

According to the Babson Survey Research Group, which has tracked students in online education sinc…………… continues on Citizens Voice
