College of the Canyons hosts Saudi educators as part of eLearning Program
News from Santa Clarita Valley Signal:

Earlier this summer College of the Canyons hosted a group of nine female educators from the National Center for eLearning and Distance Education in Saudi Arabia as part of a year-long, comprehensive eLearning Pioneers Program.

The visit was the result of an ongoing partnership between College of the Canyons and the worldwide Open Education Consortium.

During the five-day visit to the college, which ran July 27-31, the group took part in an educational program built on the principles of online learning in the U.S. and meant to prepare female faculty and university leaders with the skills need to engage in online and blending learning.

“Higher education has not yet fully embraced all the opportunities that the digital information age provides to students and faculty,” said Manal Al-Dahash of the National Center for eLearning and Distance Education. “The eLearning Pioneers program will help our female faculty and university leaders embrace technology-enhanced education, which will better prepare our students for the 21st century.”

Jeb Bush Offering Online Courses Promoting Common Core

The Foundation for Excellence in Education was founded by Bush, and he served as its chair up until a couple of months ago, when he turned the reins of the foundation’s board over to Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State under President George W. Bush.

As the New York Times also reported, Bush’s foundation is now offering three free online courses, including one titled “

BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE: Master’s program, online education a focus …

BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE: Master’s program, online education a focus …
News from News Courier:

Looking back over the past year, Athens State University President Bob Glenn said the state’s approval of a master’s program in Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management is what he’s most proud of.

The Alabama Commission on Higher Education approved the program in December, though it may be spring of next year before the school begins offering coursework at the master’s level. Athens State has offered a bachelor’s degree in the field since 2010, but Glenn believes the master’s level program will open the door to bigger and better things for the school.

“It was hard work, and we drove the length and breadth of the state many times over, and we faced significant opposition from our sister institutions that were concerned our having master’s programs would somehow hurt their institution,” he said. “We believe the expansion will not cause a problem for any other institution, and we will seek programs that will serve our region and not compete with those other institutions.”

Glenn said regional cooperation is what Athens State has strived for, and cited the school’s partnership in 2013 with the University of North Alabama on a master’s in business administration degree as an example of that. He said the school would contin…………… continues on News Courier

“Change Your Mind”

I’ve just given up a long-held prejudice.

For years, when anyone mentioned online degrees, I rolled my eyes. Real degrees, I thought, came from real schools. The kinds with blackboards, stuffy brick buildings, and ivy-covered professors.

Like the place I work.

DE—distance ed—is not new. But starry-eyed advocates of of the virtual classroom saw it as a game-changer, allowing isolated, house-bond individuals to take classes and earn degrees. Supporters had a laundry list of benefits: It would reduce pollution, since students didn’t have to drive to school; cut down on heating an air conditioning costs; and save millions of dollars by eliminating the need for more classrooms.

“It’s a God-send,” the breathless enthusiasts proclaimed.

“And it allows quiet students to speak up,” others chimed in.

What Microsoft’s Elimination of Employee-Ranking Program Means for eLearning

What Microsoft’s Elimination of Employee-Ranking Program Means for eLearning
News from Business 2 Community:

Microsoft’s controversial employee-ranking program meet its end this week as the company strives to build a more collaborative culture. While this internal move won’t directly impact consumers, the shift illustrates a larger change in corporate culture and the elearning industry towards a more personalized approach.

Microsoft leadership and employees alike have blamed the ranking program for the cannibalistic and turbulent atmosphere at the software giant over the last decade. The technique, known as stack ranking, dictated managers rank a certain percentage of employees as top performers, average or poor performers. Since Microsoft’s system had set percentages, this meant some employees had to be given poor reviews in order to match the ranking method.

In discontinuing this program, Microsoft is hoping to increase employee retention and attract new hires. Under the new initiative, rewards and incentives will now be awarded at the manager’s discretion. Additionally, Microsoft is placing a greater emphasis on employee growth and development through a process called “Connects.”

E-learning in Edinburgh schools kicks off with tablet rollout
News from Virtual College:

Schools in Edinburgh have been exploring the opportunities offered by online learning thanks to a project that has seen tablets rolled out to classrooms across the city.

Pupils studying at Broomhouse Primary, Sciennes Primary, Forrester High and Gracemount have been presented with their own netbooks or tablets as part of a programme introducing the benefits of digital education, which, if successful, could be launched elsewhere in Scotland, STV reports.

Young people are using the technology to solve algebraic solutions and read about ancient worlds, while the devices also allow them to share ideas and test their knowledge.

Maths teacher at Forrester High Barry Whelan told the news provider the school has been using a secure system that allows its employees to post homework online, so that students can access it on their tablets at home. He said it also means work can be submitted for marking quickly and easily.

Text alerts are also sent once an essay or piece of homework has been uploaded and Mr Whelan explained: “Most kids use it quite well and I can get back to them quickly and send them video links or extra resources to guide them.”

According to the teacher, having tablets in the classroom has helped him to build a supportive relationship with pupils and there…………… continues on Virtual College

Dallas ISD continues Reasoning Mind online math program despite questions

Dallas ISD continues Reasoning Mind online math program despite questions
News from Dallas Morning News:

The Dallas school district spent $ 1.6 million last year on an online math program called Reasoning Mind that was kicked off with high hopes and a party where it was lauded as “the silver bullet for math.”

Implemented in the second grade, about 13,400 students devoted hours to math lessons tailored to individual strengths and weaknesses.

A Dallas ISD study of that first year, however, largely dismissed Reasoning Mind as costly and ineffective. Yet last week, district leaders denounced the study and recommitted to using the program, which will cost an additional $ 1.5 million this year.

The study, meanwhile, was pulled from DISD’s website. “It was deeply, deeply flawed,” said trustee Mike Morath.

Those developments came after The Dallas Morning News raised questions about the program. In an interview Tuesday, Dallas philanthropist Forrest Hoglund, chairman emeritus of Reasoning Mind, defended it and said prominent charitable givers might pull their support for DISD if it isn’t continued.

The next day, Hoglund, Reasoning Mind officials and Dallas ISD leaders met to discuss the program and pledged to make it work.

‘Who’s Who’ backers

Hoglund said he has helped raise $ 25 million from a “Who’s Who list of Dallas philanthropic people” to support Reasoning Mind, a Houston-based nonprofit. Donations have h…………… continues on Dallas Morning News
